What is THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the most well-known cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It is one of the primary psychoactive compounds that causes the “high” when ingested into the body. THC binds to cannabinoid 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid 2 (CB2) receptors located in brain regions associated with a variety of body functions.
THC’s affinity for bonding with multiple receptor sites causes powerful physical and psychological effects. Some seek out those effects, but others prefer to only experience the therapeutic benefits and would prefer to avoid the ‘high’.
This is where cannabinoids like CBN can be of help.
What’s the difference between hemp and marijuana?
The two plants both fall under the Cannabaceae family and are both different types of cannabis. While genetically they may be similar, federal law differentiates the two by the THC content. THC is one of many cannabinoids or chemicals found in the cannabis plant. It’s the one that’s primarily responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis.

The term “hemp” is used to describe cannabis that contains 0.3% or less THC content by dry weight. Hemp is tested multiple times throughout the growing process to ensure it’s THC content remains below the legal limit. Usually, when people say “marijuana,” they’re talking about cannabis that can get you high. The term is used interchangeably with “weed” and a number of other terms.
Legally, “marijuana” refers to cannabis that has more than 0.3% THC by dry weight. THC content can vary among cannabis plants. Some strains are bred to be higher in THC than others.
Does CBN Have THC in it?
In short, no. CBN does not contain THC.
CBN and THC are not interchangeable terms, as they are different compounds with different chemical makeups. While they may be found in the same plant, THC produces the psychoactive effects that CBN does not. We further explore what CBN feels like in our blog post: Will CBN Make me feel high? However, when CBN is in its extraction process, the end product may leave behind trace amounts of THC. Right Wellness CBN Oil is made from organically grown hemp in Oregon farms that have been cultivated to ensure THC amounts are less than 0.3% and remain under the federally legal limit.
